چکیده

In this study, sterilization of tubular medical instruments such as catheter and breathing circuit was studied using a wire-type dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) under atmospheric pressure condition. To investigate sterilization factors of DBD under the air condition, we carried out the sterilization experiments using Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores under various gas conditions, such as air, 100% N2 gas, and N2 and O2 gas mixtures. It is deduced that the sterilization factors are synergetic effects of UV emission, ozone and OH radicals generated by discharge and/or chemical reaction of water molecule in the air due to UV excitation. In addition, we demonstrated a twisted wire-type DBD using two copper wires with diameter of 0.2mm by applying a voltage of ±0.75kV at a frequency of 5 kHz. Using the wire-type DBD, we confirmed the discharge inside resin tube for the medical with inner diameter of 4mm and length of 80cm.

Surface Decontamination by Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma

Background: Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), a source of non-thermal plasma, is used in surface decontamination. Objective: To study the effect of DBD plasma treatment, we evaluated the effect of plasma exposure time on inactivation of Bacillus subtilis. Results: Applying the DBD plasma to the culture of B. subtilis caused complete sterilization of the surface without any thermal effects. In...

Assessment of anti-bacterial activity of non-thermal plasma in sterilization of infectious wastes

In today's world, the production of hospital wastes and their adverse effects such as infectious outbreaks and resistance to treatment is an important issue. Therefore, it's vital to find a new and efficient method to manage such wastes. In this study, the ability of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to deactivate Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus bacter...

Effect of Dielectric and Liquid on Plasma Sterilization Using Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma

Plasma sterilization offers a faster, less toxic and versatile alternative to conventional sterilization methods. Using a relatively small, low temperature, atmospheric, dielectric barrier discharge surface plasma generator, we achieved ≥ 6 log reduction in concentration of vegetative bacterial and yeast cells within 4 minutes and ≥ 6 log reduction of Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores withi...

Evaluation of Dielectric Barrier Discharge Sterilization of Escherichia coli with a Swept- Wavelength Resonance-Raman Device

We show data indicating that resonance-Raman spectroscopy can distinguish live Escherichia coli bacteria from E. coli killed by a nanosecond-pulsed dielectric barrier discharge. The observations may result in an in situ, real-time method of monitoring sterilization efficacy.

A Numerical Study of the Sour Gas Reforming in a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Reactor

In this paper, using a one-dimensional simulation model, the reforming process of sour gas, i.e. CH4, CO2, and H2S, to the various charged particles and syngas in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor is studied. An electric field is applied across the reactor radius, and thus a non-thermal plasma discharge is formed within the reactor. Based on the space...
